Is Returning to Your Starting Point a Journey All on Its Own?

Circular stairways that return into themselves. Stairs that lead from a room, through a window…and into the same room.

Stairs are symbols of progress, egress, a means to move forward or at least elsewhere. But what of these? Is returning to your starting point a journey all on its own?

Check out this cool compilation of “stairs to nowhere” from Web Urbanist at http://weburbanist.com/2010/09/27/stairs-to-nowhere-15-works-of-surreal-staircase-sculpture/.

A-Muse-Meant at the Garden Store

Share your stories and thoughts and comment on those posted here.

It’s a rainy day, but a day off, and I was in need of inspiration. Shopping for home improvement, I found myself in the garden shop at the local hardware store. Delightful orchids of all shapes and colors, and in their own gorgeous pots, called out. But I’ve no hand with orchids. I worked the “homegrown” veggie aisle but I do not get enough sun to grow veggies or fruit.

Gardening is a zen thing for me. The reward of working with your hands, seeing flowers come to life, the awkward surprise when the plant you brought home only a few months ago is now taller than you.

I walked up and down the tall plants: palms, corn plants, other things I don’t know the name of. I want to replace the fake palm in the living room but can’t carry a large plant today because I hurt my elbow on…home improvement.

I quickly found myself in my fave garden store, The Garden Gate. It’s a must for anyone who loves to garden or who enjoys a beautiful space. Unusual plants, a butterfly garden, parrots, mosses, herbs, succulents, hand-painted pots, whimsical patio whirlies, and such. There I found it: the perfect accessory for my tall, proud yucca.

Whenever you need your muse, keep looking until you recognize it.

Heat Wave: Check on Your Neighbors

Record heat continues today through one third of the nation. The elderly, young, and ailing are most likely to succumb during these high temperatures. As of this posting at least five deaths have been attributed to the heat wave. Be sure to look in on your neighbors. Open your doors to those who do not have a/c. Don't forget the pets.

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad Dog World

Today is bittersweet. Football great, media personality, businessman, and all-around good guy Jim Mandich has lost his battle with cancer. Mercifully, he suffers no more. My heart goes out to his family.

Even while suffering through his own illness and treatment, Jim took the time to raise money for cancer awareness during a bike ride to benefit the UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Research Center

I met Jim years ago at a remote broadcast at a local bar. During a break, my husband asked him which ring he wears. Jim promptly handed him his 1972 superbowl ring, the one from the only undefeated season in football history, and returned to his broadcast.

Jim was gracious, generous, and grateful for all the gifts in his life. Jim lived.

We’ll miss you, Mad Dog.

Earth Day 2011: Green Is Good

Share your stories and comment on those posted here.

Today marks the 41st Earth Day.

I remember the first Earth Day, in 1970. I grew up in a college town and it was pretty much a hippie thing. Electric. Exciting.

Earth Day has evolved considerably, out of great--and grave--necessity. Note, for example, the disappearance of bees. Food production is dependent on these little guys. Frogs are disappearing, too. Frogs matter, you know. They are the environmental barometer, the first species to go.

Check out how Sir Richard Branson is working to fight climate change. How cool is that dude?
